Playstation 5

I've been holding out for over a year, not giving in to the second hand offers for an overpriced Playstation 5. A quick trip to the US also revealed that the store were empty and with no prospects of restocking before christmas. With this information,  I figured that the price would go up again coming christmastime. With an offer for a PS5 at 9000 NOK including an extra controller and a webcam I figured the wait was over; this was about 1500 NOK over the retail price at the time.

The deal was made on FINN.no a Sunday morning, and by the time the kids were out of their beds, the PS5 was on the table. They went insane! Setup on the old Samsung F8000 gave a taste of what the new console had to offer, but without a 4K tv, we did not get to see the real benefits of the new over the old console.

The hunt for a new TV started right away. Hardware requirements were 4K at 120 Hz, HDMI 2.1 ports, VRR and low input lag. At first, the Sony Bavia XR's looked promising with their "made for Playstation 5" tag. A side by side comparsion of Sony and Samsung QLED revealed that the image quality of QLED was much better. Also, the design of the Bravias was not to my liking. Samsung have a couple of candidates that were promising, Q77A at budget level but also QN85A for QLED Neo version a bit more expensive.  But in almost all aspets, the OLED TV's showed better performance. The obvious but very costly alternative is LG C1, a fantastic TV in almost all aspects except for placement in bright rooms. I resolved to buying the B1: a bit of compromise on the processing but still a fantastic TV for this purpose.

Back to the Playstation 5 again, we tested the performance in 4K@60Hz for FIFA 22. The level of detail was amazing and a big difference in in the feeel of the game as well. One of my sons wanted ghost of Tsushima as his first game on the PS5. Even at 60 Hz, the graphics was stunning.  For 120Hz gameplay we tested DOOM Eternal. Although we could not feel the difference between 60 and 120 Hz in gameplay. We also tested Raytracing mode, but there graphics did not look good.

Currently, we have no game that support VRR so that has not been tested yet.
