Smart cabin

Our cabin is in the mountains near Tynset. Since we always heat it, it made sense to install a smart plug so that we could control the heating from home, and have it warmed up while driving the 2,5 hours to get there from home.

I selected a plug I could control over wifi, and not just an app: D-LINK DSP-W215. Since I have a RPi installed, I created a python script to control it over ssh from home. It works nicely for scheduling, a feature yet to be implemented in the app.

Sissel and I have designed a lamp to be installed in one corner. It's a simple wall lamp made in massive oak, a concrete covered socket on a gray textured cord. We had planned to use a led decoration bulb like the ones we already have. I was thinking how to implement on/off and dimming of the bulb, when I found that Philips had the solution: a smart bulb with all required functionality.

Home made smart lamp

I tested the bulb with the Philips app at home, and it communicated nicely over bluetooth with on/off and dimming functionality. Having to control your light with the phone was however not what I wanted. Philips have wall mounted control panels for operation running on battery, but I was looking for something more clever: voice control.

There has been some confusion around the implementation of Philips Hue devices into Google Home over bluetooth protcol. I read up on the topic and conluded that it could be done with a bluetooth enabled Google Nest.  I tested, and -- although the BT pairing certainly took it's time and effort -- I managed to pair the bulb with Google Home.  I have no recipe on how to best succeed, but the bulb is now controllable from both Google Home and the the Hue BT app.

The Google Nest was a great asset to the cabin, now the integration of the smart plug, the TV (Chromecast) and the security camera all controllable on the same platform.

Before I left for the cabin to install the lamp (I was so excited that I could not wait until next weekend), I equipped both the kids rooms with Philips Hue bulbs and Google Nests. They were really excited about the very cool light. There was only one caveat: in order to have light disco functionality I had to buy a Philips Hue Bridge: the required functionality did not work over BT.

NOTE: If you are struggling to connect your Philips Hue BT devices to Google Home, a factory reset of the device from the Philips Hue BT app often helps. I just added a Hue Smart Plug and it would not connect before the factory reset was done.
